Roy Ward Baker, 1970, USA, 91 mins
Roy Ward Baker’s bloodthirsty, deadly adaptation of the J. Sheridan Le Fanu novella Carmilla. Come for the commentary provided by Brooklyn legend Miss Malice, stay for Ingrid Pitt and the “customary heavy breathing, lusty fangs, and […] exposed nipple or two to support the lesbian angle,” as so graciously written by BFI’s Monthly Film Bulletin upon the film’s release.
Miss Malice is a high femme, deep lez drag performer, nightlife producer, and writer, holding a doctorate in English literature. In her performance work, she is known for combining academic research with comedy and drag to explore queerness and femme identity in literature, film, and history — with a special focus on all things spooky. For the last four years, alongside award-winning drag and burlesque collective Switch n’ Play, she’s produced the sold-out show Vamp: an exploration of all things queer, decadent, and bloodthirsty that draws inspiration from the many film adaptations of Sheridan le Fanu’s Carmilla.
